Why Do Koreans Always Ask 'Did You Eat?'

"Did You Eat?"

Eating is important. Anyone can hardly deny that. After all, you’ve got to eat to survive, right? But in Korea, asking “밥 먹었어?” (Did you eat?) is much more than checking if someone had a meal.

🥄 Why Do Koreans Ask "Did You Eat?"

When two friends meet in Korea around meal time without a plan to eat together, they often ask each other “밥 먹었어?” or “식사하셨어요?” These questions both mean “Did you eat?”.
While “밥 먹었어?” literally means "Did you eat?", it’s often used as a way to check if someone’s doing okay. It’s like saying, “Have you taken care of yourself today? Are you okay?”
Especially around mealtime, this question is a caring greeting. It’s not just about food. It’s about showing you care.

🍚 Why does it have to be '밥' specifically?

The word "밥" refers to rice, but it can also mean “a meal” in Korean culture. Rice has been a staple in Korean cuisine for centuries, and it holds deep cultural significance. Even when people aren’t eating rice, the word “밥” is used to refer to meals in general.

🍚 Some more words made with “밥”

1) 찬밥

찬밥 is cold rice and like any other cold leftover food, it’s not preferred over hot rice that was just cooked. So when someone is getting the 찬밥 treatment, it means that you are not warmly treated.

2) 콩밥

콩밥 is rice cooked with beans and it used to be served mainly in prison back in the day. So 콩밥을 먹다 is often used as a slang expression for “to go to prison”. There are many other expressions about 밥 so I can do this all day, but let’s stop here and go back to the first question.

👋 From Tradition to Casual Greeting

Today, “밥 먹었어?”, "식사하셨어요?" is often used as a casual greeting, but it still reflects a caring attitude. If someone answers “No” to this question, it’s common for others to express concern and offer food. For example, they might say, “When will you eat? Take some bread!” It’s a simple way of showing care for someone’s well-being.
