A couple of weeks ago, I saw something that genuinely surprised me. (I also made a short video about it.)
At home, we have a pull-up bar in my kids’ room. It’s been there for years. My son used to jump up to grab it, laughing every time he managed to hold on for a few seconds.
But this month, he didn’t have to jump.
He just reached up and grabbed it easily.
It was such a simple moment, but it hit me deeply.
He didn’t suddenly grow taller overnight. It just happened quietly, while we were all busy living our days.
And that made me think about language learning.
Growth doesn’t announce itself
When you are learning a new language, or really anything, it often feels like you’re not making progress. You repeat, review, make the same mistakes, and wonder if you’re actually moving forward or going anywhere.
But growth is strange that way.
It doesn’t wave or shout or mark itself on the calendar.
It happens quietly, invisibly, while you keep showing up.
Every day looks the same, until it doesn’t
Parenting feels repetitive: meals, bedtime, routines.
Language learning feels repetitive, too: lessons, drills, small wins, small frustrations.
But then, one day, you understand something you didn’t before.
You respond without translating or hesitating.
You say something that used to feel impossible or difficult.
And you realize: Oh, I’ve been growing all along.
The invisible kind of progress
Growth is invisible in real time.
You don’t feel smarter every day.
You don’t notice your child getting taller.
But you both are changing, in ways only time can reveal.
All you need is patience, and a little faith that your effort matters, even when you can’t see it yet.
Maybe that’s why I love watching learners surprise themselves.
They say, “I didn’t think I was improving, but today I understood that line in a K-drama!”
And I smile, because that’s exactly what growth looks like, and I’ve also experiend this quiet kind of growth several times myself through my own language learning efforts.
So if you’re learning something new right now, don’t worry if you can’t see your progress yet. Keep showing up. One day, you’ll reach your own pull-up bar, and you’ll realize you didn’t have to jump anymore.
And I’d love to help you grow your Korean skills and speak with confidence one day. Take a look at our program here.
Thank you for reading my post and I hope you have a wonderful day.
감사합니다!
