Learning a new language doesn’t always have to feel like studying—it can be fun, entertaining, and even a little hilarious! Join us for a beginner-friendly lesson in Greek with American-Greek director Andreas Varsakopoulos, where you’ll pick up both everyday expressions and cultural quirks 🤗
Greetings in Greek
We kick things off with some essential greetings and polite expressions you’ll hear in daily life. The Greek word for “Hello” is Γειά σας (pronounced Yia sas). As with Korean, romanization doesn’t always capture the true sound, so listening carefully and repeating after a native speaker is key.
Just like in Korean, greetings in Greek also change depending on the level of formality and respect. For example, while Γειά σας is perfectly fine among friends, other phrases, such as more formal or respectful expressions, are used when addressing older people or in polite situations.

Slang and Body Language
Once you’ve got the basics down, Andreas introduces some of the more colorful aspects of Greek, slang. These expressions show how people actually speak with each other in everyday conversations.
But slang in Greece isn’t just about words. Body language plays a huge role, too. For instance, Andreas shares a gesture often used to express frustration or annoyance at someone’s mistake, a cultural habit that you won’t usually find in textbooks.

To get the most out of learning a new language, it should be pursued with structure, but this doesn’t mean we should stop ourselves from having fun. Sharing our cultures and languages with friends is a great way to bond as well as build new skills.
So, try out the greetings and slang phrases Andreas has taught in this lesson, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. The more you practice, the more natural it will feel. Most importantly, remember to enjoy the journey of learning something new!
