Don't call someone “씨(ssi)” in Korean

Have you ever wondered when the best time is to refer to someone as "씨" (ssi) in Korean? Here are some tips on when this honorific is appropriate, and some suggestions on what to say when it is not.

When Not to Use "씨" (ssi)

While "씨" (ssi) is used as an honorific and is considered formal language, there are circumstances where using this title can actually be perceived as offensive. Specifically, if you are speaking with someone who is older than you, using "씨" (ssi) would be considered insulting. This is because, in Korean, there are different honorifics depending on respect levels. For older people, the "씨" (ssi) honorific is not considered respectful when coming from a younger person.

When to Use "씨" (ssi)

The use of "씨" (ssi) can be applied in general conversation when talking to peers of the same age or working in the same position as you. You can address your colleagues as "씨" (ssi) if you all work at the same level, as there is no need for language displaying hierarchy.

The only exception to using this honorific towards older people is if it is used during an announcement to a group. For example, if a speaker is addressing a group and referencing individuals, it would be acceptable to use "씨" (ssi) for everyone, including older individuals.

Using “님” (nim) instead of "씨" (ssi)

While "씨" (ssi) can be used among colleagues of the same level, if the colleagues have different ages, it may still not be the best choice to address each other. A good replacement word for this circumstance is using "님" (nim) after everyone’s name.

“님” (nim) is considered more respectful than "씨" (ssi). So if you are speaking to a colleague with the same position but they are older, you are still not using a hierarchical honorific but are showing more respect by using “님” (nim) instead.
